Aaron Douglas
Aaron Douglas was an artist that was born on May 26th, 1899 in Topeka, Kansas. When he was a child, he developed an interest in art and was encouraged by his mother to pursue his passion. In 1925, Douglas moved to New York City, specifically Harlem. Douglas became an artist because of how heavily influenced he was by African culture. He was well known during the Harlem Renaissance for his paintings, illustrations and writing. One of the paintings he is known for is the Power Plant. Douglas liked to create his art to be like aspects of modern European, ancient Egyptian, and West African art. His best-known paintings are semi-abstract and feature flat forms, hard edges, and repetitive geometric shapes. Aaron Douglas passed away on February 3, 1979.
